The Paul Smith Story: From Nottingham to Paris
Born in Beeston near Nottingham in 1946, Paul Smith originally dreamed of becoming a professional racing cyclist until an accident sent him down a different road, straight into fashion. In 1970 he opened his first shop on Byard Lane, and in 1976 he presented his debut menswear collection in Paris. The label grew into one of Britain's best-known fashion houses and is still headquartered in Nottingham today. What makes it instantly recognisable is the way it pairs traditional British tailoring with colour and humour: the multicoloured Signature and Artist Stripes, and little motifs such as the rabbit that turn up where you least expect them.
